LIBERALS PLEDGE $400M TO MAKE MIDLANDS HIGHWAY SAFER
THE Liberal-led campaign to improve the safety of the Midland Highway by constructing a divided, four-lane road is now a fully funded pledge after the Federal Coalition committed $400 million to the project.
Federal Shadow Minister for Transport Warren Truss MP announced recently that a Coalition Government would join with a Tasmanian Liberal Government to fully fund the Midland Highway upgrade.
Local councils, industry groups, independent MPs and the RACT are getting onboard and publicly backing the Liberal plan.
The Midland Highway is the State’s most vital transport corridor and also one of our busiest.
Sharing the road daily with trucks, tourists and the general motoring public, Tasmanians know it needs upgrading to a safer, divided, four-lane standard.
Under Will Hodgman, the State Liberals have shown leadership and vision with their plan to upgrade the Midland Highway.
Along with our Federal Liberal Lyons and Bass candidates, Eric Hutchinson and Steve Titmus, the Tasmanian Liberal Senate Team took up the mantle and successfully lobbied for the $400 million funding commitment.
There is now a visionary and achievable Liberal plan for the Midland Highway.
In contrast, Federal and State Labor leaders have been anything but supportive of the proposal. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd dismissed funding for the Midland Highway one day while announcing hundreds of millions of dollars for a new Adelaide expressway the next.
Premier David Bartlett has jumped from one position to another, and most recently seems to be opposed to constructing a divided, four-lane highway.
Only the Liberals have a plan for upgrading the Midland Highway to make it safer for all Tasmanians.
