Attention Year 11 girls

Country to Canberra is kicking off by running a nationwide essay competition for Year 11 girls, with the winners receiving a trip to Canberra to have breakfast with high profile female politicians and executives. It aims to bridge the gap between rural areas and Australia’s capital, connect girls to inspirational role models, and empower more women to become leaders in their local communities.

Competition closes 12 September.

It is an honour and a privilege to have been elected the 24th President of the Senate.

I am humbled by the confidence my peers have shown in me and commit to working with them professionally in order to advance the work of the Senate and the Parliament.

Today is also a day to acknowledge twelve new Senators who are sitting in Australia’s Parliament for the first time.  I look forward to working constructively with all Senators across the parties they represent.

As well as presiding over the Senate and administering Parliamentary departments, another part of the role is hosting dignitaries and official delegations, so as a Senator for Tasmania my home state will be significantly advanced when promoting our nation.
