Supporting our Community Broadcasters

05-May-2017

New funding for Australia’s community radio sector highlights the vital role local stations play in enhancing our regional areas.

The Turnbull Government will provide $6.1 million over two years to support the rollout of digital radio services and one-off spectrum reorganisation costs for analogue radio services.

Liberal Senator for Tasmania Stephen Parry said community radio is an important voice and this initiative is a great investment for areas like North-West Tasmania.

“It complements funds already available and is further support for the enthusiastic volunteers who provide many hours for their local stations,” Senator Parry said.

“The new funding will be focussed on the roll-out of digital radio into regional areas and provide some additional investment to support infrastructure needs of community stations.”

The Government’s investment is in addition to the $15 million a year already provided through the Community Broadcasting Programme.

Throughout Australia there are 455 community radio stations transmitting to more than 5 million people each week. That makes community radio Australia’s largest independent media sector.
